A Yellow Maze

"A Yellow Maze     ©Maleko 2012    Colored Pencil on Black Paper (Paint Shop Pro border added)   12x9 inches

“I asked the Zebra,
are you black with white stripes?
Or white with black stripes?
And the zebra asked me,
Are you good with bad habits?
Or are you bad with good habits?
Are you noisy with quiet times?
Or are you quiet with noisy times?
Are you happy with some sad days?
Or are you sad with some happy days?
Are you neat with some sloppy ways?
Or are you sloppy with some neat ways?
And on and on and on and on and on and on he went.
I’ll never ask a zebra about stripes...again.”

Silver Wings

"Silver Wings"
Colored Pencil on Black Paper      5x7 inches    ©Maleko 2012

The beauty of a winged horse standing firm against the darkness that surrounds.  Wings posed in strength to erupt into flight with the knowledge that the darkness cannot keep him bound as he is free.  This drawing attempts to capture that still moment when strength rises and all things are possible, even stories that reside in legend and myth.

"Believe in legend.  Believe in myth.  Believe in miracles.
Believe in love.  Believe in the unexpected.  Believe in hope.
Believe in the undiscovered.  Believe in dreams.  Believe in God."

Life Never Repeats - Variations On A Theme!

They say that the same thing never comes around in the same way twice and I believe that.  I enjoy taking a design and using different colors and mediums to create a unique and different version of the original idea, variations on a theme!
Here are some variations on the same horse design!

Frenzy

"Frenzy"  Pastel & Colored Pencil Drawing (6x9)

This is another version of a design previously posted as Bucking Broncos!  in July of this year.  I like taking the same design or drawing and seeing how different colors and mediums can create an entirely different picture and convey another emotion.  The colors in this drawing seemed to evoke a feeling of frenzied energy and strength amidst a brilliant sunset.  Enjoy! ~M

'Simply Curious'

'Simply Curious'  12x9  Mixed Media - watercolors, pastels and colored pencil

This horse seems to me to be 'simply curious' as the
tilt of the head and the eye indicate he is looking
at something below him but what?

Black border added with Paint Shop Pro
Black flood fill using Paint Shop Pro

In this drawing I attempted to portray the beauty of the horse by emphasizing the golden yellow mane flowing in the wind and simply implying the image by using simple shapes to define the body shape.

Bucking Broncos!

A tribute to the wild mustangs of the great American West!

"Bucking Bronco in Sepia" ©Maleko 2011

The original painting (above on the left) measures 7" x 9" and was done using watercolor pencils on white watercolor paper. The a border was added using Paint Shop Pro.  The image above on the right is the sepia version using Paint Shop Pro with a black border and the image below is the negative image of the original. I love the different feelings the colors evoke.

At the Ready

" At the Ready"  Colored Pencil Drawing on White Paper   3.5" x 5"

I like to use shapes of the underlying musculature of the horse to show the implied edge of the subject floating in negative space.  This allows the eye of the viewer to complete the picture and become an active participant. The simple beauty of a horse head silhoutte captures the regal bearing of this powerful creature.  This design appears to me that this horse is 'at the ready' every watchful and just a slight tilt of the head, a flick of the ear, flaring of the nostrils is all that is necessary to convey the emotions.  the image at the right was finished in Paint Shop Pro with a black flood filled border and a picture frame added. ~Maleko

American Bison - Echos of the Past

The American Bison is a true original and its image takes us back to a seldom remembered past when they roamed freely over the land prior to their decimation at the hands of man.    I tired to capture the simple beauty, strength and majesty of this truly magnificent animal.
